Past Year 5 Work by State (2017)
The Southeast Comprehensive Center at American Institutes for Research (AIR) provides technical assistance (TA) and professional development (PD) to state education agencies (SEAs) in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina focused on
- Establishing and administering programs related to federal requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
- Implementing, scaling up, and sustaining initiatives statewide
- Leading and supporting school districts and schools in improving student outcomes
- Utilizing research-based information and strategies in education reform work
In Year 5, SECC will continue working closely with states in its region on 23 state-based projects and four regional projects. Projects center around implementation of federal priorities and opportunities for states to collaborate, share lessons learned, and address specific issues.
The SECC focuses on providing technical assistance, professional development, and capacity building to the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE). This year, ALSDE will focus efforts on reviewing research on effective processes for mathematics, science, and literacy in Grades K–8. Educator effectiveness and low-performing schools remain a focal point.
In Georgia, Year 5 work will include support to the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) in its development of the Every Student Succeeds Act plan; to Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) and Career Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) in support of College and Career Pathways and employability skills integration; and to the Division of School and District Effectiveness (SD&E) in brokering relationships with national centers and expert organizations to enhance the agency’s work.
In Mississippi, the Year 5 work will include support for key Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) offices, including Academic Education, Educational Accountability, Elementary Education and Reading, Federal Programs, Professional Development, Research and Development, School Improvement, and Secondary Education. Specific efforts to support MDE will include TA and PD to meet needs collaboratively identified by MDE and SECC. The specific support that will be provided to the agency will focus on the areas of early childhood, educator equity, English learners, and federal programs support.
North Carolina technical assistance is focused on building the agency’s capacity to support and sustain various programs and practices that have been developed and implemented to positively impact the academic success of a diverse student population. The specific support that will be provided to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) will focus on diverse learners, instructional improvement systems, state agency structures and support, and student success and sustainability.
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is focused on strengthening internal and external TA with emphasis on building staff knowledge and skills to support and sustain targeted programs and practices aimed at positively impacting various student populations. The specific support that will be provided to SCDE will focus on early childhood, educator effectiveness, personalized learning, SCDE internal systems, and support for low-performing schools.
